Who is Munto?
Munto is the lead character in the Munto (2003) and Munto 2: Toki no Kabe wo Koete (Beyond the Walls of Time) (2004) movies/OVAs from Kyoto Animation.
Munto's story begins with Hidaka Yumemi, a regular 13-year-old schoolgirl with a strange gift. She can see a floating island in the sky that no one else can. She's been able to do so since childhood, but no one believed her. To avoid worrying her family and friends, she stopped talking about it and carries an umbrella to avoid looking at the sky. She is shy and often reserved, though her friends think she 'daydreams' too much. All that changes when she meets... Munto is the King of the Magic Kingdom, a country in the Heavenly World. This world is in a parallel dimension to Earth and sometimes crosses over, which is why Yumemi can see the 'floating island'. A shortage of the life-giving force ACUTO moves Munto to act upon a vision he foresaw; in which he travels to Earth to find a girl with the power to restore balance to the Heavens. That girl turns out to be Yumemi...
Munto 2: Toki no Kabe wo Koete takes place about a year after the events in the first movie, after the ACUTO crisis ends. However, all is not well... Through instability and confusion caused by the sudden return of ACUTO, the countries if the Heavenly World become embroiled in all-out war. To stop the mayhem, Munto is advised by his councilor to return to Earth and find Yumemi; since she is the source, perhaps she can bring balance. Munto is reluctant to do so... Meanwhile, on Earth, pieces of the Heavenly World are falling onto Yumemi's town. She is worried about the implications of this and starts to have visions of the past/present. Determined to help in any way she can, she calls out to Munto...
Why make a fanlisting?
Munto is the main character for the movies and possibly the most complex. His past is tragic, his future unclear, and added to that he is a king who must strive to do the best for his people, even if it means his own downfall. take into account that he has "forseen/prophecized" certain parts of his life, this adds further burden on him. Altogether, Munto is a great heroic character and I can't wait to see what happens to him next (if there is a next movie?). ^_^
Why The Destined King?
As hinted at in the movies, Munto's mother had the gift of foresight; being able to see some part of the future's events. Munto himself seems to have inherited this as he speaks frequently of 'the fate I foresaw'. This makes me think that Munto is taking steps to bring about this 'fate' or 'destiny' and so has become a 'destined king'...At least, I think so... :)
